diabetes-awareness-monthNovember is National Diabetes Awareness Month. 29.1 million kids and adults in the U.S. have diabetes according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s about 1 out of every 11 people. Sadly, 1 out of every 4 people don’t even know they have the disease. Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined. For those who don’t know, diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood and can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Here are 5 startling facts to help raise diabetes awareness.

1.) Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

2.) There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant)

3.) About 5 percent of the people who have diabetes have type 1 diabetes meaning they have to take insulin every day because the body cannot make insulin.

4.) Type 2 diabetes is the most common diabetes with 9 out of 10 people affected by the disease that makes it impossible to keep blood sugar at normal levels.

5.) 86 million Americans have prediabetes according to the CDC which means they have a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. This puts you at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with diabetes, you may be able to manage your disease to prevent further complications by following a healthy eating plan, getting physically active, taking your diabetes medicine, and testing your blood sugar regularly.
